https://www

Is there need to type https://www before any domain name?

Help me with this. Do a I need to always type https://www. before entering any domain name website URL in browser address bar? Many-a-times if I type just a domain name with .com and hit enter it gives me browser warning about site not secure and few times certain domains are not at all loaded if I don’t append https://www to a domain.

  1. Is there need to type https://www before any domain name?

No. there is no need to type https://www before entering any domain name in the browser. Most modern websites are https enabled and redirect to www or non-www version as set by their web developer. Like entering the-online.com will take you directly to https://the-online.com as both http://www.the-online.com and https://www.the-online.com are 301 redirected a server-level to get https://the-online.com in the browser.

But many sites do not use secure https and fall-back to http and thus the browser shows a wrong as the website is not safe and secure. Sometimes, SSL certificate is wrongly configured or SSL gets expired and that domain fails to connect properly giving an error.

Many websites still use www as a default subdomain for even if you type example.com, server will redirect you correctly to http://www.example.com, while modern sites just drop the www subdomain and use root domain or naked domain which helps to save some miliseconds to fetch and connect a subdomain as all data lays on the root domain.

Often there are browser settings that may affect connecting to a website domains securely and correctly. Please check your browser and DNS settings too.

For around 90% of websites you can just enter example.com – that is domain with its correct TLD/ccTLD and you can start browsing that site quickly.

  2. Is there need to type https://www before any domain name?

No, you do not need to type https:// or www. Modern web browsers add https:// automatically and handle missing parts by directing you straight to the correct website. Just keep your browser updated. thats it.

  3. You don’t need to add https:// while typing domain name (website url) as Web browsers add the secure https:// protocol by default to protect your data. If a site is unsafe or lacks security, your browser will warn you automatically. The www part is just an old naming label and has no real technical use today. Most modern websites will redirect you to correct www or non-www version.
