Important Web Hosting Terms in this Glossary
Server: A computer which is managed by a web hosting company which holds websites.
Web Host: The company who maintains a web server with your website on, which they provide you access too.
Bandwidth: The amount of data traffic your website uses. Bandwidth is consumed every time a visitor comes to your website and loads the content on it. You pay for an allowance of data per month, similar to a mobile phone plan.
PHP: A server-side software which, when installed on your server, allows you to run PHP code on your website.
Database: A way of storing data on your web server, from forum discussion, blog posts, shopping carts, user profiles which complex websites use databases to hold information.
Control Panel: A private area within your hosting package that you can access to view data and extra features. You can usually check your web traffic and bandwidth usage on your control panel.
FTP: File Transfer Protocol, a standard technology for uploading files (.e.g your website) onto a hosting server. FTP software allows you or your web designer to do this easily.
