Evolution of AI ranking and AI visibility
Traditional search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo just considered onpage keywords, backlinks (and their anchor text) and few other signals to rank webapage on page one in the search results. But AI seems to have changed the game. With the evolution of AI ranking and AI citations that mention and link your webpage only when your website sends trust signals. AI rankings are based on trust, entity and authority.
I’ve seen when I search about “Web hosting” many AI bots or agents cite external sources which are trusted viz. Hostinger, Ionos, The-Online.com, etc. which are highly trusted brands and authority sites in web hosting industry.
How many of the times have you seen local brands getting mentioned? Actually, brand mention and topical depth have gained much more importance in AI era. The AI summaries can drive traffic without top SERP spots. If you are not cited, you’re invisible in AI answers.
Even Google’s AIO and AI mode value global trusted brands that have authority and popular in their niche. Is AI ranking just SEO evolving or a completely new game? I think this is where things are heading for sure. I’m already seeing AI citing those sites that dont even rank page 1 in tradional search engines. Feels like topical authority matters way more now than just backlinks in AI era. I’ve found that things like entity building, brand mentions, and depth of topics are becoming more important for AI visibility in AIO or Chatgpt.
I feel like visibility and brand mentions within the AI answers are the next step in positioning and getting visitors to your business websites. The smart strategy is to build real authority and structured content now before AI visibility becomes fully mainstream.
