Are Backlinks Still Important for SEO in 2026?

Barry S · 2026-10-08T16:51:34+00:00

Backlinks in Not About Just Google Rankings Anymore Some people say backlinks matter less now that AI-powered search is becoming more popular. But it’s too soon to write off link building. Backlinks, that is, links from other websites to yours can still help people find your site and understand what it’s about. The important thing is to look beyond links as a way to improve rankings or increase a third-party score. The Truth About Backlinks in 2026: Why They Aren’t Dead in the Age of AI Link building is about more than rankings In the past, many SEO discussions focused on Google rankings, Domain Rating (DR), and the number of websites linking to a page. Those metrics can be useful, but they don’t tell the whole story. What I think is that a link from a relevant website can introduce your brand to new readers. A mention on a trusted site can also help people discover your expertise, even if it doesn’t lead to an immediate visit. Over time, useful links and mentions can help build your website’s presence across the web. How Backlinks Drive AI Visibility: The New Rules of Authority for 2026 Why backlinks still matter in AI search AI-powered search tools like gemini, chatgpt, claude, etc. draw on information from across the web to answer questions and point people toward useful sources. When other relevant websites mention your brand, refer to your research, or link to your content, they create more places where people and search systems may encounter your work. That doesn’t mean every backlink will improve rankings or make an AI tool cite your website. No link-building tactic can guarantee that. But earning genuine references to useful, trustworthy content can support your broader online visibility. A better way to think about link building In 2026, link building should be about earning relevant attention and not simply collecting as many back-links as possible. I always advice to webmasters, bloggers and content creators that Focus on creating content worth referencing, building relationships with publications and organizations in your field, and getting your expertise in front of the right audience. Backlinks remain part of SEO, but their value is bigger than a ranking metric. They can help people discover your brand and strengthen your presence across both traditional search and the wider online ecosystem.
