Subdomains Good or Bad for Ranking in SERP

Using subdomains a good idea for ranking in google?

I have a website for our organisation and want to host a blog and community. Shall I use subdomain to host the company blog and forum OR use subfolder on the root domain itself? I’ve read on quora and reddit that many web developers claim using a subdomains will not benefit from root domain’s authority. Does search engines like google and bing treat subdomains as separate sites?

  1. Google treats subdomain as totally different site. So if you want to host content similar or supplementary to your main or root domain, then host it under a subfolder rather than new subdomain. This will help to pass the root domain authority, trust, credibility to the blog or community forum. If you want to develope content on alltogether different topic than the root domain then only consider hosting it on a subdomain.

  2. I prefer using subfolder as it is eaiser to manage and SEO-wise it will rank higher in SERP as it is consider the part of main domain or root domain. Subdomain, I will consider if I want to make a completly new site on a different topic. There’s also problem of session cookies, tracking, etc. when you host site on subdomain.

  3. Each subdomain is treated as separate site so your efforts for SEO, backlinks, etc doubles. I would suggest using subfolder. It will rank as high as your root domain or main site.

  4. For ranking purpose sub-domains are good if you want to rank independent content which is unrelated or unassociated with main web-site or domain. Or go with sub-directory. I could achive good ranking when I had migrated my coupons site to subdomain from subdirectory under main news website. All I had to spent on some good backlinks, and content sharing and even subdomain started ranking for terms related to coupons. Considering SE-O, subdomain can really rank well if SEO is done right, both onpage SEO and offpage.
