Do I need to do KYC to register domain at The-Online.com?
Unlike many popular domain registrars in Asia, Europe, and North Amercia who make KYC (Know Your Customer) mandatory for registering .com domain or any local ccTLD like .in or .uk which actually is not required but still those domain registrars insist customers to provide passport or aadhar or driving licence, etc, does The-Online.com registrar asks for mandatory/complusary KYC or do you ask for other government documents and face id? I asked Porkbun, Dnydot, OwnRegistrar, Godaddy and even found that Nicenic had asked for KYC before a user can register a domain or domain got suspended. How does this works with you?
hi Swetha,
The-Online.com does not ask to submit KYC when anyone registers new domain name or transfer domain to us from another registrar. In case, some ccTLD registry makes mandatory to undertake KYC of domain registrants for all registrars, then only we will impose it. Right now there is no such KYC need when you register domain here. A registrant must use real name and address while billing. That’s what is needed.
The Online does not asks for KYC from its users that why I registered domains with them. When I went first with Porkbun they asked for KYC and even didn’t allow to register domain. Some registrars flag users from Asian countries and ask for KYC before registering domains or buying web hosting. Even many Indian registrars and web hosts make KYC manadatory so I mostly avoid using them. Why a web hosting company wants my personal details? They should only know my name, email and payment method.
Even some European registrars and hosting providers ask to submit KYC and passport documents. I can say those are Hetzner, OVH, Gandi.net, OpenProvider, etc. It’s best to avoid such provider and go with those are liberal or don’t restrict / suspend servers or services if KYC documents are not provided. There are many reddit posts too on this topic.
