Why Websites Run on PHP

Why is the world’s most websites still running on PHP?

Between the servere vulnerabilities and that the language being written in a way that is very prone to go wrong, why is everyone still running on PHP? I found that PHP still powers about 69.3% of websites whose server-side language W3Techs can identify; WordPress alone runs on 39.6% of all websites in its survey. That’s a large installed base of sites, hosting setups, plugins, themes, and developers. I understand that PHP has historical design quirks, and old or inconsistent code can be error-prone. Modern PHP has added type declarations and other features that help teams write more disciplined code, but that doesn’t automatically clean up legacy applications or force every website project to use stricter practices. So why the global websites still depend on PHP.

  1. PHP helps to separate language/runtime vulnerabilities from application vulnerabilities. PHP itself can have serious security bugs, and yesterday, October 21, the PHP team released fixes for two critical flaws affecting web-serving installations. The fixed versions are 8.2.35, 8.3.36, 8.4.27, and 8.5.12. That’s a strong argument for prompt patching, not evidence that every PHP application is inherently insecure. Many familiar web flaws, such as unsafe handling of database queries or user input, can affect applications written in other languages too

  2. PHP is widely used across most websites on the web. Old sites, modern sites, all. The bigger day-to-day danger is often the whole deployment: an unsupported PHP version, an unmaintained CMS or plug-in, weak configuration, or application code that mishandles input. PHP’s own support policy says branches eventually reach end of life and stop receiving fixes, yet W3Techs’ survey still finds a substantial share of PHP sites on versions 7 and older.

  3. PHP remains common because switching has a cost, while keeping an existing PHP site running is often cheap and convenient. For a new project, choosing PH-P can still be reasonable if its ecosystem fits; for an old one, keeping it secure depends less on the language’s reputation than on maintaining the runtime, dependencies, and application

  4. PHP is still popular because so many websites already use it. For example, WordPress runs a huge part of the internet. For many companies, it is too expensive and risky to rewrite their whole website in a new language if the current one already works and makes money.

  5. Old wordpress or other CMS plugins using not-updated PHP version are of great risk to be hacked. Always use updated plugins and themes and also site builders like Kadence, Elementor, Astra, etc. Even for Drupal, Joomla, Magento CMS use update verisons along with latest PHP in your cPanel or Directadmin ‘PHP selector’. There are also tools called frameworks, such as Laravel and Symfony. These help developers build websites in a standard way. They include built-in security to protect sites from common hacking attacks. This means professional developers can now build very safe applications using PHP.

  6. PHP is lite-weight. Its is very easy to set up. Since it was made specifically for the web, it works with almost every hosting service. You can simply upload a file to a server and it works immediately. This makes it a great choice for beginners, bloggers and small businesses. Because there are so many PHP developers in the world, it remains a practical and cheap option for many projects.

  7. What are the popular and safer alternatives to PHP?

Depending on the project’s needs, there are several server-side alternatives to PHP, ranging from languages designed for rapid prototyping to those built for high-performance enterprise systems. My most favorite is Javascript (node.js) for framework ‘Express’, ‘NestJS’ as it can be used as single language for front and back end. Even ‘Python’ is best if you are using framework like ‘Django’, or ‘Flask’. It has readability and massive library support. Or use ‘Rust’ as it has Memory safety and extreme speed.
