TRAI mandates Voice, SMS only plans

TRAI asks to roll out voice, sms only recharge plans alongside existing bundle data recharges

This is quite beneficial update for phone users in India to save more money! TRAI (The Telecom Authority of India) has asked telecom companies like Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL to rollout voice, SMS only recharge plans alongside the existing bundle data recharge packs.

This comes after TRAI proposed splitting voice, SMS and data packs back in July this year, following a consumer survey that found that bundled recharge plans in the market today (which include calling, SMS, data, and streaming services) make them pay for services that they are not using. TRAI said that it believes in providing an option to telecom customers who do not want to use data or streaming services. Users can now recharge only voice pack, SMS pack, or data pack separatly.

The main benefit is for 2G users in India who only want to use voice pack for calling or SMS pack for sending text and do not want access to the internet services. Also, many users switched to BSNL from Jio and Airtel when they hiked their data pack prices. Though the bundled data pack which includes unlimited calling, SMS, data and streaming OTT platforms in one pack seems to benefit data users, there are lakhs of customers who only need voice pack or text. This new mandate of separating voice and SMS pack from bundle data plan will help telecom customers to save on unnecessary spending on high priced data plans. Now smartphone or feature phone users in India can take advantage to choose low priced recharge pack they want to recharge and spend less.

I’ve seen people spending 200 INR a month for keeping their incoming and outgoing services on the phone. Whereas, from now on a minimum recharge of INR 10 a month will be sufficient to keep the plan active.

  1. Good for many telecom users that now TRAI recognized the unfairness of this system (Cheap tricks to rob people), and issued a notice requiring telecom companies to launch voice only tariff plans without data bundling (a voice-only or Voice-SMS only pack): Introduce Voice-Only Plans: These plans will cater to users who need voice and SMS services without data benefits.

  2. Yeah.. thats an advantage for users who only want voice only re-charge plans. India’s telecom operators criticised TRAI’s new regulation mandating voice and SMS-only tariff packs, calling it a regressive step that hinders the transition to 4G, 5G and affects 2G users.

  3. Additional TRAI removed the cap of 90 days on special recharge coupons and extended it to up to 365 days.

  4. This could benefit customers who use their phones for calls and messages only. Interestingly, this doesn’t affect BSNL as it already offer voice and SMS-only plans.

  5. Indeed, this new voice recharge and SMS recharge packs will be benefiting the country’s 150 million 2G users, dual-SIM owners, and rural population.

  6. Yeah.. TRAI revised its tariff regulations, requiring mobile service providers like vi, airtel, jio to offer recharge plans exclusively for voice calls and SM-S, without mandating the inclusion of Internet data. I’m sure to buy a voice-only recharge plan for myself soon.

  7. Telecom Operators Will Soon Have To Introduce Just ‘Voice Call’ good. I will recharge my voice pack from now on!
