Porkbun Registrar Asking for Government ID Verification – Should I Stop using Porkbun?

Porkbun started asking for ID verification during domain registration

Recently, I saw a thread on lowendtalk forum and later tried to register domain name with Porkbun domain registrar (they’re based in the U.S.) and during checkout they put a notification that I will require government ID verification and then only my domain registration will be processed. So I just abandoned their cart and went with another registrar. Has anyone came across this ID verification thing at Porkbun? No domain registrar asks this. I’ve domains with dynadot, godaddy, the online, and spaceship too. Even European providers like gandi and strato didn’t asked me any ID verification.

  1. well.. there’s lots of chatter on reddit and other forums too people complaining that porkbun is requiring government id verification just to register a domain name. I would suggest you should avoid porkbun or other provider who asks for government id or KYC. There are about 800+ domain registration companies in the world, just go and choose a better one.

  2. I have never came across any domain name provider (registrar or reseller) asking for photo ID verification like porkbun does. They say it is to prevent fraud, abuse, and other misuse. But then no other domain registrar requires government photo id verification. And who knows what will they do with your government id afterwards (misuse). One should avoid web host or domain registrars asking this.

  3. Porkbun’s id processing company is “Veriff” which I don’t know if it is reputed or not. Its better you should go with some other reputed registrar.

  4. I personally hate this. Why should my ID be on 100 services, each with their own servers and security levels? It’s not safe to give out your personal government ID to online companies. There is high chance of misuse. There are other ways to verify contact details, I don’t want to upload my ID to every service.

  5. Yeah i too came across ID verification when registerring new domain at Porkun. I’m based in Europe and used American registrars like go-daddy and name-cheap but they never aksed of photo ID. The other fear here is that registrars will tend to use ID information to grant access to an account. No thank you! Imagine if someone got hold of your ID documents from one of those small time, no name companies and used them to submit a claim on your account/domain. That would be pretty ironical, wouldn’t it? I suggest that Strong passwords + 2FA should be all you need.

  6. Hi Jeff, were you using a VPN during buying domain at Porkbun? That may have triggered the ID verification notice. Often, the billing address or account address does not match the IP of the computer your are accessing, or some providers just don’t allow orders to be place via a VPN service. Try using your residential IP (local) and order again.

  7. In 2002 network solutions had asked me to upload my driver license during registration process and it still didn’t complete it. Then I switched to other provider. why waste time.

  8. the most efficient way to keep our prices low and our product-quality high is to prevent bad actors from registering domains in the first place

this is take from their site! so you decide whether to go with porkbun or not.

  9. “I recently created an account on the Porkbun website and after that, it asked for government ID verification. I have verified through my passport and uploading successful documents and I wait for more than 24 hours” that was posted by a user on reddit.

  10. I specifically avoid pork-bun for this major reason. Why the hell I need to submit a govt id when ICANN doesn’t make it as requirement nor even my govt make it mandatory to hold a site.

I agree. ICANN does not makes mandatory for domain registrants to submit any sort of government or photo ID, passport, aadhar, SSN, anything. Any domain registrar just requires a email, address and phone.
