The Difference Between SEO, GEO, AIO, AEO, SGE

Get the know the difference between SEO, GEO, AIO and more

  • SEO (Search Engine Optimization): The traditional practice of improving website visibility on search engines through keyword optimization, backlinking, etc.
  • GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): It’s more about optimizing content to perform well in AI-driven tools, including generative search experiences like ChatGPT or Gemini, where the focus is on creating data and content that AI can process and understand.
  • AEO (Answer Engine Optimization): Optimizing content to be featured in direct answers, voice searches, or snippets within search engines.
  • AIO (AI Optimization): This is about leveraging AI to optimize content for search engines or optimizing content using AI tools to generate better results.
  • SGE (Search Generative Experience): Google’s new AI-driven search interface, blending traditional search with AI-generated results.

In my opinion GEO and AIO aren’t really replacements for SEO, they’re more like new branches growing from it. Clients are starting to ask because visibility is shifting beyond just Google SERPs into AI assistants and chat interfaces. If you position content to work across both search and generative engines, you’ll future-proof better. SGE was a test feature from Google. It no longer exists. The successor is the AI Overview or AIO (also called as AI Mode)
